WBEZ's experimental station, Vocalo, has been a long time coming to Chicago airwaves, but they cleared a big barrier last week when their proposal to build a 595-foot transmission tower near Chesterton, Indiana was approved, which will allow them to bump up from 7,000 watts to 50,000; a previous proposal to build a smaller tower at a nearby site had been delayed. Meanwhile, you can listen to them online, check out their open blog, tell them your favorite cuss words, or read WBEZ general manager Torey Malatia's manifesto for the station: "It will air a continuous, seamless talk-based stream completely devoted to Northwest Indiana and Chicago metropolitan area culture, issues and selected music. It is not a news station. There are no newscasts."  (h/t Andy)

From the Chest. Tribune article: During public comment Chesterton resident Heather Augustyn said, “I am a (National Public Radio) junkie and it could be a real honor to have this programming in our community. This is a rich, cultural, artistic tourist destination and it’s a win/win situation for the radio station and the town.”

So, the good people of Porter county actually think they are getting more NPR type coverage of their region with this tower.

Nice bait and switch move.

Whet, you forgot to include: "The public can also post their own broadcast." This is really what Vocalo is all about.

And of course --- www.vocalo.org

Whet, you forgot to include: Vocalo sucks! It is not interesting to listen to. The hosts are amateurs and boring, play crap, and not worth whatever money they are being paid. Vocalo is a complete waste of WBEZ's money.
TON

Actually, Will, while everyone's entitled to their opinion, you're wrong. Vocalo doesn't suck. They just play what we upload. TON is damn good award-winning radio, and they play TON on vocalo. And if don't like it, why don't you and your fiends upload stuff you like? Then even you won't think it sucks.
