One of the key political accomplishments of gay rights activist Harvey Milk, chronicled in Gus Van Sant's forthcoming biopic Milk, was his sustained and ultimately successful campaign against Proposition 6, which was put before California voters in November 1978 and would have prohibited homosexuals from working in public schools. As the movie's November 26 opening date approaches, gay rights supporters in California are still smarting from the passage earlier this month of Proposition 8, which amended the state constitution to restrict marriage to heterosexual unions.

Not surprisingly, the movie and the current issue have become intertwined: a Facebook campaign, "No Milk for Cinemark Theaters!," is collecting commitments from members to boycott screenings of the movie at the Cinemark Theatres chain, whose CEO, Alan Stock, donated $9,999 to the "Yes on 8" campaign. "No Milk for Cinemark" has set a goal of 1,000 members—or $10,000 in lost revenue, at ten bucks a ticket—and is currently halfway toward its goal.
