Zapatista hosts a winemaker dinner with Sebastian Zuccardi, the third-generation owner of Familia Zucardi, one of the largest family-owned winery in Argentina. A five-course Halloween Winemaker Dinner [PDF] at Trattoria Roma features Vasse River and Beach Head wines from Margaret River Wines in western Australia; winemaker Sharna Kowalczuk will attend. Among the menu options: Caesar salad, pumpkin-filled ravioli with sage-brown butter sauce, and veal medallions sauteed in a lemon, white wine, and caper sauce. The American Institute of Wine and Food hosts a dinner at Kendall College to benefit Share Our Strength, which works to end hunger for kids in the U.S. Kendall alumni, including Elizabeth Dahl (Boka), Shawn McClain (Custom House, Green Zebra, Spring), and Kristine Subido (Wave) will prepare dinner, with wine pairings by sommelier Angela Roman of the Signature Room at the 95th. 6 PM, The Dining Room at Kendall College, 900 N. Unfortunately, the two most interesting food events going down this week are sold out. ChicaGourmets set up a meal with Batali's mad genius mentor Marco Pierre White--in town to promote his memoir, The Devil in the Kitchen: Sex, Pain, Madness and the Making of a Great Chef, Saturday at Ambria, AND brings Sheila Lukins and Julee Rosso together again for the 25th Anniversary update of the Silver Palate Cookbook, Tuesday at May St. Market. Oh well. That MFK Fisher talk looks good.

Tonight at 5, Quebec's Unibroue presents a tasting of all its beers at Warehouse Liquors, 634 S. Wabash. It's free.

At 6 PM tonight Fox & Obel, 401 E. Illinois, hosts "Quicker than 30 Minute Meals" with Linda Champagne of Stonewall Kitchen. It's $45. Call 312-410-7301.

Also at 6 there's a free rose tasting at Provenance Food and Wine, 2528 N. California.

The Kilbourn Park organic plant sale begins at 4 PM Friday and continues Saturday morning at 10 at 3501 N. Kilbourn. Great heirloom tomato seedlings at this event. Call 773-685-3359.

Also at 4 PM Friday, Williams-Sonoma, 900 N. Michigan hosts David Joachim and Andrew Schloss, authors of Mastering the Grill. It's free.

Quince, 1625 Hinman in Evanston is hosting Italian winemaker Giovanni Puiatti for a five-course menu with pairings Tuesday at 7. It's $65. Call 847-570-8400.

NoMi's Cellar Notes tasting series continues continues Tuesday at 5:30 at 800 N. Michigan with sparkling wines and champagne.

Back at Provenance, there's a "Chicago Farmer's Market Class," Tuesday at 6:30 that promises to teach students how to pick, store, and cook the season's bounty. It's $30.

And speaking of farmers markets, the crown jewel, the Green City Market, returns to Lincoln Park at 7 AM Wednesday. Sarah Stegner and George Bumbaris of Prairie Grass Cafe give the first cooking demo of the season at 10:30. 

Wednesday at 6 PM Fiddlehead Cafe, 4600 N. Lincoln, hosts "An Introduction to Wine and Wine Tasting." It's $30. Call 773-751-1500.

Celebrating two years hawking bon bons to the masses, Ethel's Chocolate Lounges are giving away 10,000 free four-piece boxes of chocolate Thursday, May 17, at area stores.

Tonight a portion of your tab at a whole bunch of Chicago restaurants goes toward the HIV/AIDS support organization Dining Out For Life.

Also tonight (Friday) there's a Unibroue beer tasting at Cooking Fools, 1916 W. North, hosted by a rep from the Quebecois brewery. It starts at 6; call 773-276-5565. 

Friday night at 7:30 Ghetto Gourmet hosts another secret dinner "in a very very special place near Southside." The menu includes "Forbidden Empanadas: ground pork, granny smith apples, and dried cherries w/ truffled onion jelly," "roasted chicken, rice, and cassava w/ chipotle peanut marinade, wrapped in banana leaf," and more. Guests are advised to bring a bottle and a floor cushion. $45 tickets can be purchased here.

Also Friday, Fig Catering throws an anniversary party in its new kitchen space, 1850 S. Blue Island; the menu star is bacon in one form or another. Call 773-793-1035.   

Saturday at 11:30 AM the Chicago Brauhaus throws a traditional Fruh Schoppen or "special brunch" featuring the 10-piece Bavarian brass band Die Blaskapelle Seefeld and Bavarian specialties. Call 773-484-4444.

Blue Sky Inn, a support organization for at-risk teens, holds an open house Sunday at Kitchen Chicago, 4664 N. Manor to benefit its new transitional jobs program. Coffee and pastries are free. Its from 9 AM to 3 PM; call 773-710-7346.

Also on Sunday Custom House launches a series of monthly "Jazz Sessions" featuring live music and seasonal food and drink pairings. This month the Chris Greene Quartet accompanies a selection of bubblies from Moet Hennessey, paired with antipasti (3 for $16). Call 312-523-0200.

The organic agriculture job training program Growing Home holds its fifth annual benefit Tuesday, 5/1, at the Garfield Park Conservatory, 300 N. Central Park, featuring the labors of chefs such as Michael Altenberg, Shawn McClain, Jason Hammel and Amalea Tshilds, and others. It's $80 and starts at 6 PM. Call 312-435-8601.

On Wednesday evening Chicagoland Baskin Robbins locations will be selling 2.5 ounce scoops of all 31 flavors, for 31 cents. Proceeds benefit the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation.

Also on Wednesday Fox & Obel hosts a faceoff between farmstead and artisinal cheeses featuring Deborah Dickerson of London's Neal’s Yard Dairy. It starts at 6 PM, and costs $25. Thursday at the grocery there's a free organic blood orange and tangerine juice tasting from fruit grown on the slopes of Mt. Etna in Sicily. It starts at 4 PM; call 312-379-0139.  

February 6th - 8:30 a.m.

Logan Square's Provenance Food and Wine celebrates its one-year anniversary with a slew of in-store classes and tastings. Tonight at 7 PM naturopathic physician Stephanie Draus gives a talk on "Wine, Chocolate, and Your Heath" [insert murmur of approval/reference to those heart-healthy French here]. It's $20 per person, but you get samples of the "health foods" and 10 percent off any purchase. Then on Sunday (2/11) and Monday (2/12) the store offers a one-two punch of Valentine's Day pregame events: Monday there's a make-your-own truffles class; Tuesday it's a tutorial in aphrodisiac foods. See the Web site for specifics on these and other events this month, including a beer and chocolate tasting on the 23rd courtesy of Vosges and Unibroue.

Apparently Unibroue's sales reps are keeping busy: This Wednesday (2/7) Fiddlehead Cafe hosts a five-course dinner paired with selections from the Quebec brewery. The menu includes house-cured coppa with a pomegranate, parsley, and shallot salad (paired with a sweet, tart Ephemere Cranberry white ale) and veal braised with bitter orange and coriander (paired with the wicked Maudite, which according to the PR is the company's fastest moving brand in Chicago). Also on Wednesday, from 6 to 8 PM, Juicy Wine Company and Grand Cru Wine Merchants offer a tasting of about ten wines from importer/tireless champion of Spanish wine Jorge Ordonez.
