Veteran blues guitarist Eddie C. Campbell plays a free show tonight at the Old Town School of Folk Music (4544 N. Lincoln) in the last concert of the long-running AfroFolk festival. Reader critic David Whiteis says Campbell "specializes in jaunty, irresistibly danceable rhythms overlaid with lithe guitar lines, often placed so tightly in the pocket of the beat that his lead guitar almost doubles as a rhythm instrument." Tickets, while free, are required: score them by calling 773-728-6000. The show starts at 8:30 PM.
April 16th - 2:45 p.m.
On first listen it sounds like New York's Folkore Urbano plays a brassy strain of salsa, but there’s something different about the percussion. Leader and pianist Pablo Mayor is from Palmira, Colombia, and his sharp arrangements meld the band's jazz-inflected dance grooves to the rhythms of his native land--from the ubiquitous cumbia to the marimba-driven currulao, a lesser-known tradition from the predominantly black population of the country's Pacific coast. The band plays a free show tonight at the Old Town School of Folk Music. The show starts at 8:30 PM and reservations are suggested; call 773-728-6000.
March 17th - 6:25 p.m.
In 2007 Malian musician Lobi Traoré, famous at home for his "Bambara Blues" and abroad for collaborations with stars including Ali Farka Touré and Bonnie Raitt, teamed up with Dutch blues musician Joep Pelt to release I Yougoba. They perform together Wednesday night in the first show of the Old Town School of Folk Music's new concert series "AfroFolk: Music and Culture of the African Diaspora." Seating is limited; call 773-728-6000 to reserve a spot.

February 15th - 1:17 p.m.

On Mondays and Wednesdays at 5 PM, Old Town School instructor Steve Levitt (whose bio on the site describes him as "Jerry Garcia meets Richard Feynman") hosts How Do I Play That?, an hour-long "study hall" for guitarists. You don't have to be a current student or even register in advance; just show up and find your way to room B7 on the lower level.

Mondays at 6:45 PM instructor Charles Kim holds a similar open workshop for songwriters, each week with a different theme. February 25th's is Creative Songwriting, Writer's Block, Demos, and Arranging. It's in the concert hall.
