A couple months ago I jokingly suggested everyone take a bike ride to Bensenville, but I never thought the city would steal my idea.
Actually, city officials took it one step further. Instead of a bike ride to Bensenville, they're sponsoring a September 21 5K run and walk just up the road at the new O'Hare runway. That's right -- jog beneath the jets and let the takeoffs and landings blast out your eardrums. You can pretend you're an Olympic marathoner, burning up your lungs running through the smog of Beijing. What a fun way to spend a Sunday morning!
Rosie Andolino, executive director of the O'Hare expansion project, attended last week's City Council meeting, calling on aldermen to join the fun. I'm hoping Alderman Patrick Levar (45th) will show up, just to give back for all the years he, his friends and family have been feeding at the airport patronage trough.
I sort of feel sorry for the payrollers who will probably get dragooned into getting out of bed early on a Sunday morning for this funfest. But I guess there are worse ways to make a living.
By the way, the run isn't free -- the city's charging $30 to sign up. It takes a lot of chutzpah to charge folks 30 bucks to run around a runway that was built with hundreds and hundreds of millions of their tax dollars. But hey, you also get a T-shirt, which is more than most of us will probably get out of the Olympics, Mayor Daley's next multibillion dollar boondoggle.
I'm a little disappointed the run doesn't go through Bensenville's Dead Zone. That's the ghost town Mayor Daley -- with financial help from President Bush -- created when he forced residents to sell their home. Frankly, I think there's a lot of interesting things to see in the Dead Zone. Why, they just nabbed a naked guy who apparently wandered in from a passing freight train, my law enforcement pals tell me.
Now here's a tough choice. What would you rather see: a naked vagabond or Alderman Levar running a 5K?

The shooting occurred on the 8400 block of South Dante Avenue on Monday morning, according to a Calumet Area lieutenant, who said they are on the scene as of 12:15 p.m.
A "booter" was shot while booting a vehicle, Department of Revenue Director Bea Reyna-Hickey said, directing further inquires to police.
According to preliminary reports, the city employee was putting the boot on a car when he was shot, the lieutenant said. Fire Media Affairs Assistant Director Eve Rodriguez said he was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in serious condition.
Unconfirmed dispatch reports said the booter was shot in the lower back about 11:40 a.m., possibly by the owner of the car being booted.
Police were unable to confirm that information as of early Monday afternoon.
I am sorry this guy got shot,AND I wish him a speedy recovery. Daley's tax collectors or revenue agents must understand you are hurting people. I would rather removing Daley from office then incite violence against city workers. Let Daley and his 11th and 19th ward garbage pick up their own extorted money.
And to the Reader, do you people even care that a paper of your quality has such utter rubbish for message boards?
The O'Hare 5k will feature Rosie Andolino taking on Bob Schillerstrom,Skippy Saviano, and Victor Reyes. Who will cum first? I heard Water Managements John Whirity is taking bets on the race. With Water Managements Tim Degnan jr selling tickets !

"Flood and how citizens in a disaster are treated here:
I worked on a detail today, called into 017 for traffic control at the mouth of one of the many flooded streets. The city in it's wisdom sandbagged the side street to protect the through street and thus forcing the water to backup west into the side street and causing more severe flooding for the residents on that streets.
I was there on traffic control but also preventing the residents from tearing down the sandbags which were exacerbating the flooding of their homes.
One grey haired man came up to me almost in tears. His basement was totally flooded and the water was about to get into another area of his house, he badly needed some sandbags to help keep the flood waters away from the door.
He begged me for help so I got on the radio and asked where sandbags could be obtained for citizens to get to help save their own homes.
This man didn't ask for a city crew, he only wanted sandbags from the city where he lives and votes and pays taxes. He was desperate.
The flood detail was using Citywide 4 and I asked and waited. A supervisor came over the air and said there were no sandbags to be had for citizens. The supervisor said, on the air and apparently from the Command Van to tell the man that 'he was on his own.'
I didn't have to tell him that. He was standing right next to me as were his sons. He heard the words over my police radio as well as I did and some of his family.
That was it, nothing the city that robs him blind in taxes could do for him. It wasn't election time so Daley didn't give a shit about him or his plight.
He 'was on his own.'
And when he gets his home cleaned up and is living there again he can look forward to getting booted for two parking tickets.
And higher taxes and fines for almost everything.
But sandbags?
No way, he 'is on his own.'
As spoken by a Chicago Police boss on Citywide 4 this afternoon around 1530 hours.
Truer words were never spoken.
He is on his own.
